Proposed road closure in Frederickson ignites controversy

by Josh Magill

Over the last few months, a proposal to close a portion of 180th Street East in Frederickson has quietly moved its way through the Pierce County processes.  However, as stated by county engineer Brian Stacey at the March 26th Economic and Infrastructure Development Meeting, there was no notification sent prior to a decision being made – not to surrounding residents or community organizations like Frederickson’s Clover Creek Community Council (F-CCCC). The Hunt for DB Cooper – An interview with a so-called Cooper copycat – skyjacker Robb Dolin Heady

by Bruce A. Smith

I spoke with Robb Dolin Heady this week, a man who hijacked an airliner in 1972 in the style of DB Cooper.   Robb has served his time in prison and has been released for several years.

Over the course of two lengthy phone conversations we had a very frank discussion about his crime and also shared a warm discourse about our lives.  He and I are the same age, and we both experienced the 1969 draft lottery – but in different ways.  Robb got drafted and I didn’t, and that put him on a trajectory that included hijacking an airplane. Dept of Health seeks court order to stop unlicensed Eatonville medical practice

Editor’s Note:

An Eatonville health practitioner is dispensing treatments illegally, the Washington State Department of Health charged today in the press release posted below.  The agency says it has obtained a restraining order against Sung Min Im, who apparently was offering cancer treatments at a health center called the Cleansing Way Lifestyle Change Institute.  The DoH alledges that Mr. Im does not have proper medical credentials.  His facility is located in the Ski Park neighborhood near Ohop Lake. Beyond the Borders expands to help folks without transportation

~

Editor’s Note

It’s with a sigh of relief I’ve learned today that one program that truly helps people is being maintained as governmental budgets continue to be slashed.  One big example is the “Beyond the Borders” shuttle service that has been a life-saver in South County as Pierce Transit has canceled bus service in Graham and Spanaway, with more contractions rumored to be coming. The Hunt for DB Cooper – I join the Hunt

by Bruce A. Smith

Yes, I’m part of the resurgence, caught up in the swell like a giddy newbie.

That’s not to say I had never heard of DB Cooper and his skyjacking, for I had, but I was 22 years-old at the time Cooper hijacked his airplane.  I had just returned to college at Hofstra University after a couple of years ski-bumming and hitch-hiking, so I had other things on my mind other than paying attention to a hijacker snatching a plane, even if DB was the first guy asking for something other than a free pass to Cuba.  In fact, I didn’t realize that DB Cooper was the first to extort an airline for money until I joined the Hunt in 2008. by Bruce A. Smith

The Resurgence – The Internet, DNA, and the Legacy of Larry Carr

The resurgent investigation of DB Cooper didn’t begin with just one dramatic act, but rather, was a slow convergence of technology and cultural events.  Foremost was the advent of the Internet, followed by the evolution of DNA as a forensic tool.  Accompanying these developments came provocative death bed confessions and the de-classification of military secrets from the Vietnam era, most notably the actions of rogue commandos in illegal combat operations.
