Stories from Backstage – The Judds: Wynonna and Naomi

by Bruce A. Smith

The Château Saint Michel Winery, Woodinville, WA; and Nashville

When Wynonna and Naomi opened their 2000 reunion tour in Nashville, my life in Tennessee became cross-pollinated with Judd stories.

First, I breathed the fine, luxurious mist of enchantment spun by the Queen of Nashville, Miss Wynonna.  Her reunion concert with her mother convinced me she had earned the right to rule Music City. Continue reading

Stories from Backstage – Linda Ronstadt and Los Camperos de Nati Cano

 By Bruce A. Smith

October, 2008 – The Paramount Theater, Seattle

Attending one of Linda Ronstadt’s Tex-Mex concerts is like driving through the night to Mexico on Spring Break.  When you start off everything looks familiar and everyone is speaking English, but when the sun rises you’re in ol’ Mey-he-co and the only folks you understand are your buddies in the back seat of the car. by Bruce A. Smith

I’ve never heard Sarah Brightman speak with a Cockney accent.  Nor have I heard her sing with any proper British accent that would reflect her heritage as the original London lead in Phantom of the Opera, or Cats.  Continue reading

Stories from Backstage – Remembering the ol’ Britney Spears

by Bruce A. Smith

Key Arena, 2004

Several years ago I witnessed “Blonde Pride Night” at the Key as 10,000 of Seattle’s finest young cuties celebrated their Blondeness, and paid homage to their Golden Goddess, Britney Spears.  But, I didn’t know that until the show was over. Continue reading

Democrats gather at annual corn feed in Eatonville

 by Bruce A. Smith

Continuing a tradition that dates back to the 1980s, local Democrats gathered at Marilyn Rasmussen’s farm in Eatonville last week for their annual corn feed.  Typically, former State Senator Rasmussen’s shin-dig draws political luminaries including Democratic state office holders, and in past years even Governor Gregoire has made an appearance. by Josh Magill

With nervous anticipation my wife and I took our three children on their first plane ride recently.  Our trip was from Seattle to Albuquerque, New Mexico, a three-hour flight.  We thought this would be a daunting task with a nine, six and three year-old in tow.

Defense leads Spanaway Lake High School to win over Puyallup

They did it – the Spanaway Lake Sentinels defense sealed the edges and plugged the holes, not allowing the opponents to go just anywhere they desired – and helped defeat the Puyallup Vikings 24-21 in their second game of the season. Continue reading

The cutest girl on the bus got on at about 38th St.  She had lots of cleavage, beach-blonde hair, and was about 25 or so.  I starred. Continue reading
