The Men of Honor – Chapters 5 and 6

Prologue

My name is Dave Stein.  At the time of the nuclear bomb attack on Worcester, Massachusetts I was a psychotherapist for the Unified Alliance of Worcester and assigned to Unity House, their foster care residence for juvenile male offenders.

This story is my account of how my clients and I survived the destruction of our city and formed the rescue group known as The Men of Honor.

Orting volunteers step-up to feed the hungry

Orting: The best volunteer community I have ever known

By Pat Wilson

I have lived in a great many places throughout my life (70+ years) and seen a lot of people who give their all for their community, but Orting I believe has them all beat for volunteerism.  For the past 21 years I have been involved with the people of this little City.  I have worked with city officials, churches, business and civic associations; people have not always agreed, but over and over I have watched them put their differences aside and work for the good of the community.  Knowing how differences can tear a community apart, this is extremely heartening. Day One, 3:20 p.m.

Terry and I sat back in her office’s big, stuffed chairs.

 “What now, boss?”

“Wait and see, I guess.  Angie said she’d be leaving after supper.  She lives only ten minutes away on Pilgrim St, down by St. Casimir’s.  That’ll be seven o’clock-ish.  I think she’ll be okay.  Gina?  I don’t know about her.” Continue reading

The Men of Honor of Unity House – Chapter Two

The following is an excerpt from the novel, The Men of Honor of Unity House, and it is based upon my experiences working with foster care kids in a residential facility.  To access all the excepts, click on “Categories” in the column to the right and scroll down to The Men of Honor of Unity House, then click again.

Day One, 12:15 p.m.

Unity House had survived, relatively.  Our propane tank and its connections to our stoves and hot water heater had not ruptured, nor our in-ground utility lines.  In gratitude, I kissed the light switch in my office.  I guess years of watching my wife’s Bube kiss the mezuzah on our front door in LA had left its mark.  Frankly, being located in a working class neighborhood close to the public utility plants was a life-saver.
