Day Two, 4 pm – The Men of Honor start to get some help

The news from St. Vincent’s was not good, and when Terry returned she went straight to her computer.

Sixty-odd patients and staff had survived there, but were in very rough shape.  They had nary a drop of water and absolutely no food, plus they had lots of injuries.  Worse, the most intact places were the basements and subterranean hallways, which were pitch black and lacked ventilation. St. Vincent’s was desperate for whatever we could give them, but most of all they needed the outside world to know how critical their situation was.  Terry aimed at getting their mayday call out to the world.  Continue reading

Day Two, 12:45 p.m.

Two more come home, and the Men of Honor concept takes shape

A bespeckled young man stood out in the dust holding two boys in each hand, and all of them were wrapped in green garbage bags.  At first I didn’t recognize Deon and Naleef, and why they didn’t just walk in the house on their own I didn’t know.  We motioned to the main door in front of the house, and the stranger led our guys in that direction.  We all met at the door.  Kevin P ran out into the dust and embraced Tiny T, who was stepping out of his totally-tricked-out electric purple, chrome-wheeled, spinners flyin’, four-wheel drive extended cab Chevy Suburban, with a plow on the front and snow chains wrapped around each one of his over-sized studded snow tires.  Continue reading

The Men of Honor of Unity House – Chapter 7

A novel.

Prologue:

My name is Dave Stein.  At the time of the nuclear bomb attack on Worcester, Massachusetts I was a psychotherapist for the Unified Alliance of Worcester and assigned to Unity House, their foster care residence for juvenile male offenders.

This story is my account of how my clients and I survived the destruction of our home and city, and formed the rescue group known as The Men of Honor.

Love, radiation, and an idea

Critical to our survival was learning about the “seven-ten rule,” which decreed that for every multiple of seven hours radiation decreased by a factor of ten.  The danger from the dust was one-tenth after the first seven hours, and then one-hundredth after forty-nine hours.  Continue reading
