Update on SR 7 road closures in Eatonville

 The Washington State DOT has issued the following press release announcing the closure of Mountain Highway due west of Eatonville for several months.  The state will be repairing a section of hillside that is prone to land slides, and traffic will be diverted along either the Eatonville Cut-off Rd or the SR 161 extenstion south of town and then through downtown and east via the Alder Cut-off Rd. Local ties to new revelations about the downing of TWA Flight 800 in 1996

A dramatic – and surely shocking for many – documentary on the crash of Flight 800 is about to be shown on cable TV. In the July 17 broadcast, titled “TWA Flight 800,” six members of the official NTSB investigation will describe how their work had been compromised seventeen years earlier.  They charge that evidence was doctored or stolen by the FBI, and that the official conclusion that TWA Flight 800 exploded in mid-air due to faulty fuel lines is untrue.

A special screening of “TWA Flight 800” will be broadcast at the Triad Theater in Yelm on July 17.

I am eager to view the documentary because I have many personal ties to this crash and investigation. As a former commercial beachcleaner on Long Island, I know well the area where the remains of 800 washed-up, primarily the beaches at Suffolk County’s Smith Point Park.  Continue reading

Free film at Grand Cinema explores local filmmaker’s journey caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s

Pierce County’s Office of Aging and Disability has announced a community awareness event on Alzheimer’s that includes a free showing of a film by Ann Hedreen and her experiences caring for a mother enveloped by the disease.

Update on Bethel School District’s summer lunch program

The Bethel School District announced today that some changes are being made regarding their free summer lunch program.  Besides switching the Spanaway site to Spanaway Lakes High School, the lunch program, which begins Monday, June 24, will also feature an exercise and fitness component. Bethel School District to offer Summer Food Program for Children

State releases initial findings on same-sex marriages

The Mountain News has received the following information concerning same-sex marriages from the Washington State Department of Health.  They report that since legislation was enacted authorizing same-sex marriage, more than 20% of all marriages in the state have been same-sex, with women couples comprising 63%.
